You may noticed something...a few symptoms missing? Yes. Well, as it turns out, steady Lithium doses can be harmless. However, if one is as stubborn as Nik and decides to go off every couple of months the side effects (that Nik has; some go with PAP) are:
Looks a lot like some of the PAP symptoms, huh? Caffeine and caffeine withdrawals worsen many of the symptoms in both PAP and Lithium side affects.[/blockquote]
Questions, comments, etc. are welcome! Hope I managed to pull enough creativity into this. ^^;;
Nikole Ross' Illness
It should be noted that Nik has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder NOS and is a rare, severe case.[/size][/li][/ul]
She is on and off Lithium every few months.
Not to mention instead of drinking and doing drugs she is extremely addicted to chocolate. Yes, chocolate. Caffeinated, sugar, fatty chocolate, not the cheap stuff.
However it does not deter her from sexual activity; being Pansexual she'll have sex with anyone - male, female, and the in betweens. However, it's been almost three months since she has had sex.
The girl has many, many animals: seven cats, four dogs, two rabbits, and three hamsters. All in that apartment she shares with her tidy, health obsessed brother (drives him up the wall!).
Current Symptoms:
- cough
- trembling in hands
- muscle stiffness/weakness
- shortness of breath
- clammy hands
- fever
Unnoticed Symptoms:
- delusions (dismissed as nightmares since they mostly happen at night)
- loss of appetite/weight loss (this isn't uncommon for her, but it's worse now)
- Mood swings; irritablity (she's bipolar, usually a give-in)
Symptoms to come:
- coughing up blood
- seizure following delusions
- nausea, vomiting
- chest pains
- blueish fingernails
So what does she have? Bad luck![/blockquote]
Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis
(PAP)
(PAP)
PAP is a rare lung disease. There is an excessive and abnormal accumulation of surfactant in the lungs. This interfers prevents oxygen from being properly absorbed and results in shortness of breath.[/size][/li][/ul]
What causes PAP? Well, it's not very well known. The best theory is that there is a lack of (activity of) GM-CSF. Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is, in a nutshell, cells that destroy or re-use dead cells - surfactant cells. Without them, or without their activity, the surfactant cells just keep building.
Supposedly the disease is progressive. There are three forms; it should be known that Nik has the Primary form, which is the most common. It commonly occurs in both men and women between the ages of 20 and 40, though it can occur in children, too.
PAP both causes and is mistaken for pneumonia. The best way to diagnose is a lung biopsy; scans and x-rays can make the disease look more like an infection...especially if there is one.
Yeah, giving her pneumonia, too, to frustrate House and have him frustrate his team. And Cuddy. And Wilson.
Yes, PAP is fatal, though it's a slow progression.
Nik is about half way.
Symptoms:
- shortness of breath
- coughing
- reduced oxygen levels in blood
- fever
- weight loss
- infection of the lungs (pneumonia)
- blueish fingernails (advanced stage)
You may noticed something...a few symptoms missing? Yes. Well, as it turns out, steady Lithium doses can be harmless. However, if one is as stubborn as Nik and decides to go off every couple of months the side effects (that Nik has; some go with PAP) are:
- trembling hands
- muscle stiffness/weakness
- stomach/chest pain
- nausea, vomiting
- low fever
- delusions and hallucinations, followed by seizure
Looks a lot like some of the PAP symptoms, huh? Caffeine and caffeine withdrawals worsen many of the symptoms in both PAP and Lithium side affects.[/blockquote]
